Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Moisture Lock

A glowing, hydrated complexion provides the perfect canvas for party season make-up, but seasonal changes can leave skin feeling the polar opposite. Skin’s Natural Moisturising Factors and ceramide levels decrease, partly due to the effects of all that cosy central heating. As if this wasn’t bad enough, we have wind-burned lips to contend with, which are less than ideal for showing off bold party season lipstick.

As the skin changes from season to season, it is always important to regularly re-evaluate homecare routines. Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Moisture Lock is a good starting point to get your skin festive season ready.

Skin Moisture Lock combines hyaluronic acid with gluten-free wheat ceramides to help hydrate the skin from the inside out.

Hyaluronic acid – which is found in the dermal layers of the skin – helps to lock, hold and bind moisture for a dewy, radiant complexion.

Meanwhile the wheat ceramides waterproof the skin, which helps to prevent trans – epidermal water loss.

For an extra anti-ageing hydrating boost to see you through the festive season, combine them with Skin Omegas+.

Gatineau Aquamemory Hydration Collection – Review

November 11, 2019 by Dave Jackson

We at Beauty Fresh thought we’d better give you some inspiration and review the Gatineau Aquamemory Hydration Collection.

The anti-ageing experts at Gatineau have compiled the perfect gift set comprising of three lovely products.

The first product is the Gatineau Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Cream Gel. This Gatineau moisturiser is perfect for night time use. It’s almost a mousse-like texture that allows it to glide on to skin and spread evenly over your face and neck. As with all Gatineau products it smells delightful and feels so luxurious.

With its hydrating, nourishing and restorative properties, it’s the perfect product to cure any skin worries.

The second product in this gorgeous collection is the Gatineau Aquamemory High Hydration Cream Mask. For those of you that are not aware, a hydration mask is essentially a thick moisturiser which you can either wash off after ten minutes or leave on all night. It’s best used at night so you won’t have to worry about your makeup sliding off, but equally you can apply a thin layer during the daytime for a light layer of hydration.

The best thing about hydrating masks is that you can apply them as often as you like.

Unlike moisturisers they absorb quickly, so as soon as your first layer has absorbed, you can keep applying more to build up the hydration intensity. After a few days use, dry and flaky winter skin becomes completely non-existent.

The third and final product is the Gatineau Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Eye Roll-on. This thin, fast-absorbing product is easy to apply and provides the perfect amount of hydration for under-eye skin.

You can apply the product twice a day, once in the morning pre-makeup application and once at night before bed.

The cooling formula penetrates skin almost instantly, meaning your skin won’t feel heavy and clogged. Use daily for bright eyes as well as reduced dark circles and puffiness.

Happy Gut = Healthy Skin

October 22, 2019 by Dave Jackson

Do you want beautiful, healthy skin and to support a normal, healthy gut?

What we put on our skin on the outside is massively important as the wrong creams and lotions can wreak havoc and leave the skin feeling and looking very compromised.

However, rebalancing the skin from the inside is going to reach cells that is impossible for topical skincare to reach. Also, our skin portrays our general health and if we are eating badly then our skin will represent that on the outside, acting like a mirror. We have an internal Eco System.

One of Beauty Fresh’s favourite supplements that we recommend for EVERYONE is Advanced Nutrition Programme Skin Youth Biome.

ANP Skin Youth Biome is a nutritional supplement which supports normal, healthy gut flora and healthy, youthful looking skin. Skin Youth Biome is beneficial for all skin types.

This supplement has a unique combination of good bacteria specifically developed to target skin by working from the inside out.

It has full scientific studies into the strains of bacteria and has been formulated from 5 billion active cultures.

Youth Biome combines four unique probiotics with antioxidant-rich vitamin C to help balance intestinal flora, improve skin hydration and support a supple, more youthful complexion. Skin Youth Biome uses advanced microcapsulation technology to help live cultures survive stomach acid and pass through the intestine to release where they are needed most. WOW!

So, what will this do for our skin?

Independent research and studies showed significant improvement in hydration, wrinkle depth and skin integrity, whilst there were also small improvements in smoothness and elasticity.

Our bodies Microbiome (economic system of bacteria) can have a huge impact on our well-being. Microbiome has become hot in the skin industry of late as we are all discovering new ways of keeping young. If our microbiome isn’t functioning properly then this can lead to several issues such as: Immune System disorders, inflammation, fatigue, moodiness, inflammation, issues with metabolism as well as skin concerns such as problematic skin and premature ageing.

It all must start from within. Will you be giving Skin Youth Biome a go?

Benefits of Skin Youth Biome:

• Works from the inside out
• Supports the skin’s natural barrier
• Helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles
• Supports gut flora
• Nourishes dry skin
• Boosts collagen formation

Directions: Take one capsule of Skin Youth Biome per day with a meal.

One capsule daily with a meal is recommended. Supplements are more effective if taken with food, especially protein. Each pack contains 60 capsules to be taken daily. Since the daily dose is one a day so that is about 2-month supply.

Commenting on the new launch, Dr Cheryl Clay at Beauty Fresh, says:

“Many people are unaware of the connection between their gut health and skin. The fact is our skin may suffer if our microbiome isn’t healthy. New research has shown that our beneficial bacteria counteracts the intrinsic and extrinsic causes of ageing by reducing inflammation and fighting free radicals. Researchers into the human microbiome have started to identify the different roles that specific strains play in our health. This is why Advanced Nutrition Programme’s hard-working Skin Youth Biome delivers four science-backed strains of live cultures and vitamin C to keep your gut health in check.

Not only does this ingenious complex support gut flora, it also improves your skin’s natural barrier, hydrates dry skin, contributes to normal collagen formation and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles!

All ingredients are of exceptionally high quality, with full traceability back to their origins and free from artificial flavourings, synthetic colours or genetically modified ingredients. For Skin Youth Biome, we chose four strains that support skin health.”

Hyaluronic Acid… Why is it an Anti-Ageing Hero?

October 15, 2019 by Dave Jackson

Which looks younger – dry, dull skin or a hydrated, dewy complexion? The answer, of course, is the latter. We all know how important vitamin A is in reversing the signs of ageing, but it has a companion which takes the effects to a new level: hyaluronic acid.

The chances are your clients will have heard of this super ingredient. Known for its incredible moisture retaining abilities, it’s their skin’s not-so-new best friend. So what exactly is it, and why should you be recommending products that contain this anti-ageing hero?

Take a closer look…

Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluron or HA, is part of a group of substances in the skin called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Their primary purpose is to maintain collagen and elastin by helping them to retain moisture, and this is what hyaluronic acid does best.

It has a unique capacity to hold an astonishing 1000 times its own weight in water, plumping out the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Over 70% of our body is made of water, so keeping moisture levels balanced is key to beautiful skin and general wellbeing.

Plump, youthful skin

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in many areas of the body including joints, tendons and eyes. Around 50% is found in the skin; it’s the main component in the extracellular matrix that holds cells together to form living tissue.

“Hyaluronic acid has a major structural function to keep the dermis at optimum volume because of its amazing ability to hold water and cushion cells like a protective gel”

says ANP founder Dr Des Fernandes.

“This property has an important shock-absorbing function that protects blood vessels and other structures.”

It works in the space between cells by filling the gaps between the collagen and elastin scaffolding, like mortar between bricks. It also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, so as well as helping to turn back the clock it also has a calming, protective effect.

Restore and Replenish

Although our bodies produce hyaluronic acid naturally, the amount declines as we age so it’s important to replenish by applying it topically and taking it in supplement form. Levels typically start to drop after the age of 40, and you may even have clients over 60 who have none at all. In addition to the intrinsic ageing process, external factors can also deplete levels.

“Hyaluronic acid has a high turnover rate, it only lasts 2-3 days in the skin”

says Dr Fernandes.

“We break down about a third of our hyaluronic acid every day so we can easily fall into a deficit if we expose our skin too much to the sun. UV rays destroy it, this causes a thin skin with poor keratinocyte activity.”

Other external aggressors such as pollution, smoking and alcohol can also degrade hyaluronic acid so it’s important to safeguard levels in order to achieve plump, youthful skin.

Believe the Hype

The anti-ageing effects of hyaluronic acid on skin may seem miraculous, but it’s backed by cold, hard evidence. In fact, there is so much research that a team of scientists undertook a review of the most recent studies and found that it does indeed have impeccable skincare credentials*.

“A thorough analysis revealed that hyaluronic acid based formulations exhibit remarkable anti-wrinkle, anti-nasolabial fold, anti-ageing, space-filling, and face rejuvenating properties”, they stated. “This has been achieved via soft tissue augmentation, improved skin hydration, collagen and elastin stimulation, and face volume restoration. Our critical analysis evidenced that application/administration of hyaluronic acid exhibits outstanding nutri-cosmetic efficacy and thus is warranted to be used as a prime component of cosmetic products.”

Hyaluronic acid is amazing – it’s official.

Size does matter
Topical application is essential, but your clients should be wary – while many brands happily boast about the fact that their product contains hyaluronic acid (sometimes called HA on the ingredients list), they’re less keen to tell you that the molecules are often too big to penetrate the skin. For this reason, it’s important to educate your clients, because hyaluronic acid is available in different molecular weights.

In one study, women aged 30-60 applied a cream containing 0.1% Hyaluronic Acid to the eye area for two months, resulting in significant hydration and elasticity and reduction in wrinkle depth. Crucially, the researchers found that the lower the molecular weight, the better the result.^

Inside out
Taking hyaluronic acid orally has also shown to have huge benefits for skin. In one of many studies, 60 subjects were given 120mg for three months. They all showed significant improvement to wrinkle depth, skin luminosity and suppleness compared to the placebo group.~ Another piece of research confirmed that not only did ingesting it dramatically improve dry skin, it also increased synthesis of the body’s own supply and stimulated cell proliferation in the fibroblasts.¤ Interestingly, a settlement in Japan called Yuzuri Hara has become known as the ‘Village of Long Life’ because over 10% of its inhabitants are aged over 85 (10 times the Western norm).

Most are fit and healthy with amazing skin. Scientists discovered that they eat root vegetables specific to that area which are full of hyaluronic acid, providing further evidence of its incredible youth-boosting properties.

Perfect Partners
In addition to replenishing hyaluronic acid levels topically and orally, it’s important to encourage the body to ramp up production. This is where that other anti-ageing hero comes in – Vitamin A. “We constantly need to replace hyaluronic acid and the most effective way to do that is to ensure adequate levels of Vitamin A in the skin”, says Dr Des Fernandes.

“It’s one of the most powerful stimulants for hyaluronic acid production. This is why we say that Vitamin A is a moisturiser and the moisture that your own body makes using Vitamin A is so much better than anything you could apply.”

So next time you see clients concerned about ageing, a tailor-made skincare regime with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin A is your go-to solution.

It might not the fountain of eternal youth, but it’s possibly the closest we’ll get.

Daily Defence – A Routine for Autumn & Winter Skin

October 11, 2019 by Dave Jackson

The hot summer days will soon make way for golden leaves and chilly Autumn breezes. Changes in weather can have a dramatic impact on skin, so now is the time to prepare before winter makes its icy appearance.

Daily Defence & Damage Limitation – A Guide to Perfect Skin

Sometimes you just can’t win. When temperatures take a tumble, our natural instinct is to hunker down with a mug of something warm and comforting, but as the heating dial goes up, skin moisture levels go down.

Equally, the minute we venture outside our skin is assaulted by blasts of wintry air, which can be just as drying.

Luckily help is at hand. Beauty Fresh is here to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy as winter approaches. Even if you can’t quite hang on to your tan, your radiant glow will be the perfect accessory to complement your winter wardrobe.

Damage limitation – Care about Skin Care

Before preparing your skin for the delightful onslaught of central heating, frigid air, freezing cold rain and bone shaking icy blasts, it’s advisable to address any damage you may have sustained over the summer months. Have you spent many a happy moment soaking up the rays on a sun-baked beach? What has all that UV exposure done to your skin? Even people who religiously slather themselves in bucket loads of sun cream may still experience negative effects such as dryness, or reactions to the sunscreen itself if they used one with a high chemical content. Underlying pigmentation issues often rear their heads as summer draws to a close, with brown patches and uneven skintone becoming more obvious.

Beauty Fresh recommends you to tackle these problems with Advanced Nutrition Programme Skincare Ultimate, which contains Pine Bark to reduce uneven skintone.

Fortify your fortress

A key reason for skin becoming dryer in winter is that ceramide levels drop. These make up 50% of the lipid layer in the protective stratum corneum, think of them as part of the mortar that holds skin cells together. They are responsible for ‘waterproofing’ skin by preventing Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL), while creating a fortress to stop external aggressors such as pollutants and bacteria penetrating the lower layers.

Do you live in a busy city? Ceramides are part of their go-to solution for protecting skin from the pore-clogging grit and grime lurking in urban atmospheres.

Unfortunately, just as we need them most – in the throes of harsh, wintry conditions – ceramide levels start to plummet. This is partly down to changes to the skin’s pH and the constant switching from warm to cold environments, so replenishing them topically and orally becomes even more important.

High and Dry

The dryer the air, the dryer the skin. Admittedly, the air might not feel particularly dry when you’re caught in a torrential downpour minus a brolly, but the atmospheric humidity is actually far lower than in the summer months. This, combined with our beloved central heating and even our car heaters, can quickly increase Trans Epidermal Water Loss leading to tight, itchy, cracked skin.

Tackling parched winter complexions calls for two lines of attack: preventing skin from drying out in the first place, and rehydrating it if it does. Beauty Fresh recommends you to take some simple measures at home to ward off the effects of your cosy central heating. Investing in a humidifier or placing bowls of water on top of radiators will help to keep the air moist, while limiting shower time and using warm, rather than hot, water will stop skin drying out so quickly (your hair will thank you too).

When prevention tactics don’t work and skin is doing a good impression of the Sahara, it’s tempting to eschew summer’s lightweight formulations in favour of their heavier, richer cousins.

Step away from the gloop. Environ® founder Dr Des Fernandes warns against smothering skin in excessively rich formulations because it can deplete its Natural Moisturising Factors (NMFs), which means that it starts relying on the excessive ‘artificial’ moisture provided by the creams rather than learning to moisturise itself.

“The balance of NMFs in the skin is upset when people use rich creamy products”, says Dr Des. “People love them and one clue to their surreptitious and nefarious effects comes from when they stop using these creams. They immediately complain of dry skin. What they don’t realise is that the reason their skin becomes dry is not because of the new less-oily product but because their skin is virtually depleted of NMFs and their stratum corneum is incapable of holding in the water.

All because the skin is under the misapprehension that moisture levels are adequate”. Far better to use lighter, vitamin A rich products which normalise the skin’s own moisture production, along with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for an extra anti-ageing hydration boost.

You might be tempted to slough away dull winter skin, but exfoliation can also deplete NMF’s, as well as damaging the protective stratum corneum. The good news is that if you follow a tailor made skincare regime rich in the right ingredients, you won’t need to.

The right kind of protection

It may sound counter intuitive, but protecting skin against the sun is still important after we kiss goodbye to summer. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to wear sunscreen all year round, but it’s not quite as simple as that. SPFs only protect against UVB rays, which cause burning, and these aren’t actually present in the UK from May to March. Therefore, Beauty Fresh is recommending you to be wearing a sunscreen that offers UVA protection. These rays don’t burn, but they can reach skin even on murky, overcast days and cause free radical damage which may only become apparent years later.

Not all sun creams or foundations offer UVA protection, so be sure to check the label, and don’t forget to reapply throughout the day when possible.

Adding a hefty dose of antioxidants, orally and topically, will provide a second line of defence by neutralising free radicals generated by UV rays and blue light.

Arm your army

When we’re healthy on the inside, it’s reflected in our skin. The opposite is also true, ever noticed your skin looking dull when you’re battling a hideous case of the flu? Making sure your clients are supporting their immune system is key to keeping their post-holiday glow.

Apart from eating a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables, supplementing with vitamin C and Zinc will give your internal army a boost. Around 80% of the immune system is found in the gut, so probiotics are essential for making sure there’s enough beneficial bacteria to ward off persistent winter bugs. D

on’t forget that the skin itself is an active immune organ, it encounters all manner of toxins and pathogens on a daily basis which it actively fights in order to stop them entering the body.

Making sure it’s properly nourished will help it to do its job.

Combat Sun Damaged Skin with Vitamin A

July 25, 2019 by Dave Jackson

Reverse and Rewind… How to combat sun damaged skin with Vitamin A

As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure. Sun damage is no exception, but what should you do when it’s too late? Have you spent numerous summers happily soaking up the rays with scant regard for UV protection, but what was once a golden tan has now morphed into leathery, pigmented and prematurely aged skin?

Reversing the damage can be a challenge, but you have a powerful weapon in your arsenal: Vitamin A.

‘I believe that sun damage is a disease that can be treated’, says Dr Des Fernandes, Environ founder. ‘It’s caused by a deficiency in vitamin A’. Given its extraordinary skin benefits, it’s no surprise that this vital nutrient has powerful, proven anti-ageing properties.

Vitamin A ‘normalises skin’. Admittedly, this doesn’t sound particularly exciting, but what does Beauty Fresh mean by ‘normal’ skin. It’s smooth. It’s even-toned. It’s hydrated and luminous. It shows no sign of premature ageing. Doesn’t sound quite so boring now, does it?

Vitamin A’s normalising abilities are particularly important when it comes to sun damage because there is often a lot to reverse.

Do you suffer with pigmentation marks, excessive wrinkling and a course, thickened skin?

These symptoms can manifest themselves decades after UV ray exposure, so even if you have shunned the sun and religiously slathered yourselves in sunscreen for the past ten years, your skin may tell a different story if you were less careful in your youth.

Thickened Skin
Course, leathery skin is the hallmark of sun damage. Think Donatella Versace. Photo damaged skin has a thickened stratum corneum (often referred to as the horny layer) and thinner epidermis, healthy skin has the opposite. When we’re constantly exposed to UV rays the skin tried to protect itself by thickening the horny later, resulting in a rough texture that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, making it look dull – the polar opposite of a dewy, radiant complexion that so many clients aspire to.

If you look at sun damaged skin under a microscope, the cells on the epidermis are loose, there are gaps where the collagen has been broken down, compromising its elasticity and ability to retain moisture.

Healthy skin has a thinner horny layer with ‘compacted’ cells, which means they are tightly packed together. Vitamin A has been shown to play a significant role in influencing the genes that cause epidermal stem cells to grow into fully functioning keratinocytes and mature into healthy layers of the epidermis. It increases the growth of the basal layer which is why the epidermis becomes thicker and therefore more tolerant to damaging environmental effects. Its has also been shown to compact the cells on the horny layer, helping to reverse UV damage.

Collagen Breakdown
In addition to thickening the epidermis and thinning an excessively thickened horny layer, Vitamin A also promotes collagen formation by supporting the fibroblast cells which make this essential protein. Our collagen production slows down significantly as we age, so compounding the problem with UV exposure spells disaster – goodbye plump, youthful skin, hello premature sagging and wrinkles. Applying vitamin A topically and taking it orally gives your body the building blocks it needs to make new collagen, resulting in a firmer, younger looking complexion and fewer lines. Vitamin C is also important for collagen formation, lightening and brightening the complexion.

Pigmentation Problems
Solar lentigines more commonly known as sun spots or liver spots, are another tell tale sign of too much sun and not enough protection. They occur because UV radiation damages the keratinocyte cells. These make up 90% of the epidermis and have several functions during their life cycle, one of which is communicating with melanocytes which are responsible for melanin production. When they are damaged, this communication is disrupted, resulting in either too much melanin being produced (hyperpigmentation) or too little (hypopigmentation). Vitamin A normalises this process by protecting skin from UV damage repairing rh DNA of the keratinocytes which stops it ‘telling’ the melanocytes to make more melanin and reducing the activity of tyrosinase which is ultimately turned into melanin.

Some people wonder why pigmentation marks can’t be removed with exfoliation. The reasons for this are complex, but in essence melanocytes transfer melanin to the keratinocytes in the lower layers, which then carry it up to the surface of the skin. However, if the melanocyte’s DNA is damaged by UV exposure it will keep ‘giving’ the keratinocytes too much melanin. This cycle will continue until it’s been normalised with vitamin A.

Vitamin A is fundamentally the most important molecule in addressing sun damage and anti-ageing. There is simply nothing else like it!
